Is There Downtime After Microneedling?

Have the effects of collagen loss and environmental exposures led to dull-looking skin with an uneven texture? Microneedling at Alamo Ranch Laser Aesthetics restores youthful collagen levels and promotes cellular turnover to rejuvenate your skin. Especially when combined with radiofrequency (RF) energy, this treatment can undo many signs of aging and sun damage to achieve a brighter, firmer look.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling or collagen induction therapy is known for its ability to trigger new collagen production. We use the Secret™ RF microneedling system to achieve maximum benefits. Microneedling uses tiny needles to create microchannels in the skin that reach into the dermis. Your skin responds to these channels with healing and growth factors that help restore the skin’s surface. It also creates new collagen to correct skin laxity by tightening and firming.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During your microneedling session, a handheld device moves over your skin, creating the microchannels. As each needle enters a few millimeters into the skin, it releases pulses of RF energy that travel deeper into the dermis. This energy stimulates the cells in this layer to produce even more new collagen. The increase in collagen reduces lines and wrinkles while improving texture and issues such as acne scars.

Is There Downtime After Microneedling?

When you leave your microneedling appointment, your skin may look red and feel sensitive. These effects usually fade in less than a day, depending on the intensity of your treatment. Your skin will remain sensitive to irritants for several more days, so we recommend:

  • Avoiding the use of scrubs, peels, and other harsh products
  • Be cautious with scented products that can be irritating
  • Apply recommended products while the skin is primed to absorb them
  • Wear sunscreen and avoid sun exposure
  • Avoid toners that contain alcohol and can sting

You can return to your usual activities after microneedling with no downtime. You can return to work immediately, although if you have a very intensive treatment, you may prefer a few hours to let the redness fade. Because the needles only work at a depth of a few millimeters, your skin recovers rapidly.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments you will need depends on several factors, including the type and severity of concerns being addressed. Deeper textural issues or significant sun damage will require more sessions than issues with fine lines or minor pigmentation issues. Most people need between three and six treatments to see their best results.

How Long Does it Take to See Results After Microneedling?

Your collagen-producing cells become more active immediately after microneedling, but it takes time for their efforts to become visible. You may see results within a few weeks of your first session. However, full results take about three months to develop, so you may not see the complete benefits of your treatment for a few months after your final session.

Once established, microneedling results can last a year or longer. We recommend annual touch-up treatments to maintain your high levels of collagen production. You can also prolong your results by wearing sunscreen consistently and using quality skin care products that promote collagen production and offer anti-aging benefits.
