About Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal deactivates hair follicles to stop hair growth. After an initial series of treatments, most people can enjoy hair-free skin with quick yearly touch-ups. Popular with men and women, laser hair removal works almost anywhere on the body where you have unwanted hair.

Hair grows from structures in the skin called hair follicles. The root of the hair sits inside the follicle. Laser hair removal targets the pigment in the hair roots, heating the follicle and damaging it, so it stops producing hair. We use the Cutera Xeo® laser for hair removal. Its Nd: YAG 1064 laser works on more hair and skin tones than many other lasers, making treatment available for more people.

Many people report that the pulse of the laser during hair removal feels like a rubber band snapping on the skin. Other people experience a quick stinging or tingling sensation. Discomfort is usually minimal. Your treatment session can last anywhere from half an hour to an hour, depending on the area being treated.

Most people need somewhere between five and eight laser hair removal treatments to see the best results. Hair follicles spend part of their time in an active, hair-growing phase. At other times, they rest in a dormant phase. Follicles that have no hair growing in them are invisible to the laser. A series of treatments means catching all the follicles while they are active, so none of them regrow.

You can see up to 90% hair reduction after your initial series of treatments. You may start to see some fine, sparse hair regrowth that may take anywhere from several months to several years to appear. Once a year, maintenance treatments with the Cutera Xeo® laser will address those few rogue follicles and restore your smooth, hair-free skin.

Your skin may look red and a bit swollen for a few hours after treatment. This does not prevent you from going back to any of your normal activities. You should avoid sun exposure and wear a dermatologist-approved sunscreen while your skin heals.

If you have had enough of shaving or waxing, you may be a good candidate for laser hair removal. People with blond, red, or gray hair may not see good results because their hair lacks enough pigment for the laser to target. If you have waxed or plucked your hair recently, you will have to wait for the hair roots to grow back before treatment.
